Our first stop today was Artist Paint Pots where you walk to a boardwalk and then up and around and up farther around bubbling geysers. While at the top of some of the viewpoints you saw what could look like an artist’s palette of different colors.
Our next hike was at Mammoth Hot Springs. The
hike at the Lower Terraces was quite a walk, but we just took our time walking
around some beautiful formations. We had
parked at the very top of the boardwalk trail and walked by many
formations. We could see the hotel,
cabins, and housing down below and beyond the terraces. There were many stairs going down, and we
knew that we would have to walk up to get back to the truck. Luckily there was a nice breeze to keep us
cool.
Unlike the other major hydrothermal areas in the park,
here limestone is the dominant underlying rock instead of rhyolite. The area is one of the world’s best examples
of travertine-depositing hot springs, the rock that forms those terraces here.
Heat-loving microorganisms create the colors of the
terraces; colorless and yellow thermophiles grow in the hottest water, orange,
brown, and green thrive in cooler waters.
Colors also change with the seasons.

We
stopped at Undine Falls which were gorgeous and they were visible very close to
the parking lot. A little farther on we
stopped in the parking lot for Wraith Falls
